Introduction
------------
x-SKED3 is a network software product from Extensions Software
Corporation that provides a low-cost scheduling solution for modern
businesses. x-SKED3's calendar functions offer network users an easy
means of tracking room and resource availability, while x-SKED3's
automatic scheduler allows easy entry of recurring events.
x-SKED3 provides the scheduling features needed in any
workgroup/resource environment, including:
- Room and Resource summary calendar
- Room and Resource detail calendar
- Room and Resource weekly calendar
- Custom-defined room or resource fields
- Automatic event scheduler
- Multi-level access/security system
- International date/time options
- Administrator system
- Online help system
- Printout to LPT1, LPT2, LPT3, or disk file
- Network-aware of Banyan VINES(R)
- Network-aware of Novell NetWare(R)
Scheduling System: x-SKED3 provides an appointment schedule data file
for each defined room and/or resource. This file contains the date,
time, description, and person responsible for each scheduled time
period. x-SKED3 uses half-hour time blocks for ease of scheduling, and
graphically displays both a summary as well as a detailed schedule for
an entire 24-hour period. Users with the proper security access may
add/edit/delete scheduling information as well as enter recurring
events using the x-SKED3 automatic scheduler.
Administrator System: Built into x-SKED3 are complete administrator
maintenance functions, based on a user-level security access system,
including the following:
- System Information (system name, system type, etc)
- New User Dafaults
- Room/Resource Prompts
- User Administration (user setup and access)
- Room and Resource Administration (definitions and information)
- Activity Log (audit trail)
- Error Log (should errors occur)
- Main Database Reindexing
- Room and Resource Database Reindexing
- Database Summary
x-SKED3 Operations Guide - Page 4
Requirements
------------
For Standalone PC Use:
- IBM or 100% compatible computer with 384K available memory
- Floppy disk drive (5.25" 360K or 1.2M, or 3.50" 720K or 1.44M)
- Fixed disk drive
- Monochrome or color (CGA/EGA/VGA) display
- Parallel printer (if printouts are desired)
- MS or PC DOS 3.1 or higher
For Network Use:
Multi-user network operating system which utilizes MS/PC DOS file
and record locking calls (ie, Banyan VINES(R), Novell NetWare(R),
etc.) and workstations that meet the standalone PC requirements
listed above. Note, however, that workstations do not necessarily
require a floppy or fixed drive.
General Operating Guidelines
----------------------------
All x-SKED3 menus and displays are normally scrolled using the
keyboard cursor keys. As a menu is scrolled, the current choice is
highlighted. You select a menu choice by pressing the ENTER key when
the desired choice is highlighted. You may also press the letter or
number corresponding to a menu choice to select that choice.
The ESC key is used throughout x-SKED3 to escape (exit) from or abort
(quit) any x-SKED3 activity. Normally, pressing ESC returns x-SKED3 to
the previous (calling) menu or activity. Pressing ESC during the
summary calendar screen terminates the x-SKED3 program by returning
you to the DOS prompt. Printouts can also be terminated early by
pressing the ESC key.
A printer must be connected and on-line in order to print listed
information or reports. x-SKED3 supports a LPT1 local printer and
LPT2/LPT3 network (shared) printers. Note that a printer test is
performed prior to displaying the printer choices, and only valid
choices may subsequently be selected for printed output. If
workstation disk file is selected, you will be prompted for a valid
disk file drive, path, and file name.
x-SKED3 Operations Guide - Page 5
Security System
---------------
x-SKED3 includes a multi-level user security system consisting of the
following accesses:
- Administration access (determined by the system administrator)
- Scheduling access (determined by the system administrator)
Admin access allows a user to perform all system maintenance
functions as well as all scheduling functions.
Scheduling access allows a user to add/change/delete room and/or
resource calendar information as well as generate recurring calendar
events using the x-SKED3 automatic scheduler.
Help System
-----------
Throughout most x-SKED3 activities, on-line user-help is available by
pressing the [F1] key. This help normally consists of a scrolled
display containing a text description for the activity from which help
was called. Text help screens are available for the following x-SKED3
activities:
- Summary Calendar
- Detail Calendar
- Weekly Calendar
- Automatic Scheduler
- Administration Menu
- System Information
- New User Defaults
- Room/Resource Prompts
- User Administration
- System Activity Log
- System Error Log
- Room/Resource Administration
- Printing

Installation
------------
The x-SKED3 diskette (or archived file) contains the X-SKED3.EXE
executable program file.
To install:
- Create a subdirectory on your standalone PC or your network file
server named X-SKED3 (actually, any name you prefer is acceptable)
- Switch to the created subdirectory
- Copy the files from the diskette (or archived file) to the
\X-SKED3 subdirectory
- At the DOS prompt, type X-SKED3 and press ENTER
x-SKED3 will then self-install by creating database and index files.
Since X-SKED3.EXE is an overlayed executable file, network file
attributes must be configured for shared file use. For example, in
Banyan VINES(R) installations, the following command:
SETATTR +S -E X-SKED3.EXE
... will set the executable file X-SKED3.EXE for shared use.
The x-SKED3 data drive and subdirectory may also be specified from DOS
as follows:
X-SKED3 S:\X-SKED3
... where S:\X-SKED3 is the network drive and subdirectory for the
x-SKED3 data.
If x-SKED3 has been installed on a Banyan VINES(R) or Novell
NetWare(R) network, the user login name is obtained directly from the
operating system. For example:
Fred@Applications@Ext Soft
For other network installations, a DOS SET command may be used to
store the user name. For example:
SET X_USER=Fred
Otherwise, the user name is obtained from the login screen.
For initial x-SKED3 installation, you will likely want to choose Admin
from the Summary Calendar screen to access the administration menu,
from where you can customize x-SKED3 for your own installation.
